NGMA Bangalore
The Palace Road heritage mansion turned national gallery. Tagore and Ravi Varma inside, lawn and a mirror pool out front.
why we keep going,
The building is half the reason. The 1898 Manikyavelu Mansion at 49 Palace Road, plus a newer gallery block, with old trees and a reflecting pool sitting between them.
The permanent collection runs from colonial-era miniatures through Tagore, Ravi Varma, Amrita Sher-Gil and Jamini Roy. Rotating exhibitions are the reason regulars come back.
Twenty rupees gets you in. Skip weekends and go on a weekday morning. The rooms are nearly empty and you can sit with a painting until you've actually looked at it.
local context
Opened to the public in 2009 in the Manikyavelu Mansion at 49 Palace Road; the heritage building was converted into a 1,551-square-metre gallery plus a new block.
