Hesarughatta Lake
A 1000-acre drive-out lake with grassland edges. Bird photographers' favourite, 30km from the city and worth it.
why we keep going,
Migratory bird counts run into the thousands here in winter. Carry a long lens or borrow one; you'll regret your phone camera.
Best between October and March. Outside that window the heat or the rain will make you wish you'd stayed in.
Pair with the grasslands and the Avalahalli forest next door for a full half-day. There's nothing to eat on site. Pack.
local context
Created in 1894 to feed Bangalore's water supply; the adjoining grasslands draw rare species like the Lesser Florican and Indian Eagle Owl.
